Physical AI Chip Startup XHEART Adds Renault, Chery and CXMT to a Cap Table Backed by About 5 Billion Yuan in Three Years

The Momenta-linked ADAS chip designer has completed a new strategic round with Renault Group investing for the first time, Chery adding on, and memory maker CXMT joining, Chinese media report. Founded under three years ago, XHEART has raised about 5 billion yuan in total, and its X7 chip already ships in Volkswagen's ID. ERA 9X.

XHEART, a Chinese startup designing compute silicon for what it calls physical AI — the chips behind autonomous driving and robots — has closed a new strategic round that brings three unusual names into a Chinese chip company: Renault Group, Chery Automobile and CXMT. The figures circulating in Chinese media, including a cumulative total of about 5 billion yuan (roughly $700 million) raised in under three years, come from industry sources cited by Kebanban Daily and Eastmoney rather than an official announcement, so treat the totals as reported, not confirmed by the company.

The investor mix is the story. Renault's participation is its first direct check into XHEART, and it ties a European volume automaker to a Chinese silicon supplier at a moment when carmakers are rethinking where their driving intelligence comes from. Chery, one of China's most aggressive exporters, deepened an existing position. CXMT — the state-backed memory giant whose car-grade LPDDR5X is already in mass production — joined as a new backer, a pairing that analysts read as giving XHEART pricing and supply advantages on memory exactly when DRAM costs are surging, while giving CXMT a design-in path into automotive compute platforms.

The company's pedigree explains the access. Its chairman and legal representative, Li Jun, previously ran chip development at Momenta, one of China's leading autonomous-driving software firms, and Momenta founders Cao Xudong and Xia Yan hold indirect stakes through XHEART's controlling shareholder. The cap table built before this round already read like a cross-section of Chinese industrial capital: the national AI industry investment fund, two social-security-backed sci-tech funds, state development and local industrial investors, SAIC's Shangqi Capital, NIO Capital, and market firms including IDG Capital, Shunwei, GGV Capital, CDH Investments, ZhenFund and Cathay Capital.

Commercially, XHEART is further along than most chip startups its age. Its main product, the X7 ADAS SoC, targets L2++ urban assisted driving and the L3/L4 market. It first shipped in the Volkswagen ID. ERA 9X and has since been designed into MG and Roewe models under SAIC, Cadillac models under GM, and several Chery nameplates. In August the company, Momenta and BlackBerry's QNX announced a jointly built autonomous-driving platform that pairs Momenta's full-stack software with the X7 and QNX's safety-certified operating system — the kind of chip-plus-OS-plus-algorithm package global automakers increasingly demand before regulatory sign-off.

XHEART is not an isolated case. Chinese media count a wave of "new chip forces" raising large rounds on the back of AI demand: Xiwang has raised more than 1 billion yuan, Qianhe Yibang over 2 billion, and Lanxin Suanli close to 2 billion, with founding teams drawn from SenseTime, NetEase, ByteDance and other AI companies. The pattern is consistent: teams that spent years building AI systems are converting that domain knowledge into silicon, aiming at the gap between general-purpose GPUs and what cars and robots actually need.

What the Renault-CXMT-Chery round really signals is consolidation of the physical AI supply chain across borders. A European automaker, a Chinese car exporter and a domestic memory champion now share exposure to the same Beijing-based chip designer. If the X7 keeps winning sockets across SAIC, GM and Chery nameplates, the bet is that driving compute follows the same arc as phone SoCs: a few designers, deep platform integration, and the rest of the industry renting the result.
