AI assistants have officially graduated from research demos to real checkouts. Stripe, whose Link wallet handles consumer payments for companies like Airbnb and Uber, says agentic purchases made through Link grew 38-fold in September, while the dollar volume of those payments grew 20-fold. The average agentic ticket was roughly 100 dollars, and retail led both measures, according to data the payments company shared exclusively with Upstarts Media.
The timing matters. When Stripe computed those September numbers, about 70 agents were signed up to use Link for agentic commerce. Dan Hill, head of consumer product at Stripe, told Upstarts the wallet now powers roughly 200 agents — more than doubling since the data was crunched — and that his team runs daily stand-ups with each of them in separate Slack channels. Link overall serves about 300 million users, so agents remain a small slice, but "the volume we're seeing now is becoming very material," Hill said. "Agentic commerce is here, people are using it, it's going to keep growing."
Names on that list read like a cross-section of the agent boom: Meta's Muse assistant, xAI's Grok Bot, the consumer assistant Instinct, and work-focused agents such as Skydive and Town all settle purchases through Link. When Meta integrated Link into Muse in September, Stripe said the agent could check out directly at more than 1 million businesses that accept Link. At other merchants, Link issues the agent a single-use virtual card scoped to the approved purchase; the consumer approves each total in the chat interface, and the agent never sees the underlying card details. Anthropic and OpenAI use Link too, though not yet for agentic commerce.
Much of the recent growth rides on plumbing changes Stripe shipped on September 29 for the failure modes specific to agents. Incremental authorization lets an agent raise an approved amount when taxes, shipping or add-ons change the final price instead of restarting checkout. Obstacle guidance routes the agent to a URL where a human can complete a 3D Secure challenge or pick another payment method after a decline. Consumer-permissioned spending insights run through Financial Connections, which Stripe says covers more than 12,000 financial institutions and over 97 percent of US bank accounts, and eligible agent-completed purchases now carry purchase protection.
There are honest caveats in the data. Stripe has not published the baseline the 38x is measured against — the multiple first appeared in a September 29 product post describing a month-over-month jump — and a period that included several high-profile agent launches can overstate the underlying trend. The gap between the two multiples is also telling: transaction counts grew nearly twice as fast as dollar volume, which fits consumers delegating small, low-stakes retail buys rather than major purchases.
Still, the direction is what payment executives have been waiting to see. A 20-fold volume increase translates directly into fee revenue even at modest ticket sizes, and every new agent that ships with Link checkout widens the funnel. The real test comes with October and November data: if growth persists after September's integration wave, agentic commerce has a pulse; if it collapses back toward single-digit multiples, the 38x will look like a step function from new launches rather than a habit. For now, Stripe is the first payments platform with hard evidence that AI agents are not just browsing — they are buying.
