Gartner Says 80 Percent of Neoclouds Will Stop Operating Independently by 2030, and Executives Reportedly Expect Only 7 to 10 of Hundreds to Survive

Days after CoreWeave bond yields pushed past 15 percent, Gartner forecast that more than 80 percent of GPU rental providers will cease operating independently by 2030, against a 4.9 trillion Dollar gap between the 8.5 trillion of revenue required and the 3.6 trillion expected. The Information reports executives expect only 7 to 10 of hundreds of neoclouds to survive, with Nvidia offering easier credit and about 20 billion Dollar in leases.

The reckoning in AI infrastructure lending has reached the companies that rent GPUs by the hour. The Information reported on October 18, citing industry executives, that only 7 to 10 of the hundreds of neocloud providers are expected to survive the current cycle, and that Nvidia is actively propping up its favorites with easier credit terms, help finding data center sites, and about 20 billion Dollar in leases. The report lands one week after CoreWeave's unsecured bonds traded below 80 cents on the dollar with yields above 15 percent, a repricing this site covered when the notes first broke.

The arithmetic behind the pessimism comes from Gartner, whose October 14 report has become the reference point for the bear case. The firm estimates AI providers will spend nearly 1 trillion Dollar on infrastructure in 2026 and another 6 trillion Dollar from 2027 through 2030. To cover that capital expenditure, service the financing costs and deliver a 12 percent return on invested capital, data center owners would need about 8.5 trillion Dollar of cumulative revenue through 2030. Gartner expects attributable AI revenue of no more than 3.6 trillion Dollar over the same period, leaving a shortfall of roughly 4.9 trillion Dollar and more than 3.5 trillion Dollar of planned spending exposed to impairment.

On that basis Gartner forecasts that more than 80 percent of neocloud providers will cease operating independently by 2030. The firm is explicit that this includes sales and acquisitions, not only bankruptcies, and it still expects neoclouds as a group to capture around 20 percent of an AI cloud market it sizes at 267 billion Dollar by 2030. In other words, the sector is forecast to keep growing while most of the companies in it are absorbed.

The financing market has already voted. Global AI-related debt issuance fell to 23 billion Dollar in September from a record 113 billion Dollar in June, according to Morgan Stanley data reported by the Financial Times, and roughly a third of AI capital expenditure is now estimated to be debt-funded. CoreWeave's five-year credit default spreads blew past distressed levels mid-month before the stock bounced, and Nvidia itself shed roughly 270 billion Dollar of market value in a single week as investors questioned the circular structure of vendor-financed demand.

Nvidia's response tells you where the leverage sits. The company holds stakes in CoreWeave and Nebius, has committed to buy back unused capacity, and now effectively acts as lender and broker for the sector, taking its own GPUs as collateral and steering customers toward sites with power. For the chipmaker, keeping a handful of large, well-located rental operators alive is cheaper than letting demand for its chips collapse with their balance sheets. That support is exactly why executives told The Information the survivors will be few: a market where one supplier curates access to credit is not a market with hundreds of independent winners.

The pattern that emerges from both reports is consistent with earlier signals, including Firmus shelving a listing that had been pitched above 30 billion Dollar and banks quietly shopping data center loans they had just written. Providers with long contracts, secured power and investment-grade balance sheets should consolidate the sector; everyone else is refinancing into a wall. The next twelve months of maturity walls and contract renewals will do more to settle the question than any forecast, but for the first time the market is pricing neocloud debt as if consolidation, not growth, is the base case.
