Google Sells Students AI Pro Plus Full YouTube Premium for $8.99 a Month, and a Billing Quirk Can Stretch the First Payment to 2029

Google's official student bundle combines Google AI Pro (5 TB, Gemini 4 Argon, four times standard limits) with a full YouTube Premium subscription for $8.99 a month against a $35.98 list price, for up to four years of verified eligibility. Tech blogs report that claiming the free 12-month AI Pro year first and then upgrading converts the remainder into prorated days, pushing some next billing dates to 2029.

Google's back-to-school offer has quietly become the cheapest legitimate door into a frontier-model subscription, and this week it went viral again for an unexpected reason. The core deal, announced on YouTube's official blog on August 19, bundles Google AI Pro with a full YouTube Premium individual subscription for eligible college students in more than 80 countries - in the United States for $8.99 a month, against a combined list price of $35.98 for the two plans bought separately. The terms state the discount runs "for up to 4 years," after which the plan automatically renews at the standard monthly price once student status concludes.

The fine print matters more than the headline number. Eligibility is verified through SheerID at sign-up and re-checked annually; school-issued Google accounts do not qualify, the plan is for individual use only, and a valid payment method is required. If a student loses eligibility mid-term, Google's terms say the subscription converts to a standard Google AI Pro plan at $19.99 a month. The bundle sits alongside a companion offer from the same August announcement: US students can claim Google AI Pro free for 12 months (redeemable by December 31, 2026, auto-renewing at $19.99 afterward), while students in more than 140 other markets get a free year of the cheaper Google AI Plus tier, normally $4.99.

What makes the paid bundle attractive in late 2026 is what Google AI Pro now contains. Since the Gemini 4 Argon rollout on October 13, the $19.99 plan is the minimum tier that includes Google's current flagship model with four times standard usage limits, alongside 5 TB of storage, expanded Deep Research quotas and the upgraded Gemini Notebook. A standard AI Pro subscription carries only YouTube Premium Lite where available; the student bundle is the only consumer plan that pairs full Premium - ad-free video and music, background play, offline downloads - with the AI tier, which is why Google prices the pair at a 75 percent discount to the $35.98 list.

The fresh wave of attention came from a billing quirk rather than a new announcement. Chinese-language tech blogs this week documented, with screenshots, what happens when a student claims the free 12-month AI Pro year first and then upgrades to the $8.99 bundle: Google Play converts the remaining value of the trial into days at the cheaper plan's rate. One widely shared account dated October 19 reports paying a single $8.99 and seeing the next billing date set to February 23, 2029 - 858 days away, of which 827 were prorated from the untouched free year. These are user-reported results, not an officially documented Google promotion; Google's own help pages warn only that switching from the trial to a paid plan takes effect immediately and cannot be reversed. The arithmetic follows standard Google Play proration, but anyone attempting it should verify the next-charge date on the confirmation screen before paying, because outcomes will vary by account and region.

Two cautions recur across the write-ups. First, the trick only exists for people with genuine student eligibility who claim the free year first - buying the $8.99 bundle directly is just a normal monthly subscription that renews every month. Second, the upgrade is one-way: Google's documentation says moving from the trial to a paid plan ends the trial, and per Antigravity's model documentation, Gemini 4 Argon access in Google's developer tools requires a paid, non-trial Pro plan - which is precisely the status the upgrade confers, and the reason the viral guides recommend it.

The student push is one front in a broader subscription war for the campus market. OpenAI is giving US college students four free months of ChatGPT Plus if claimed by October 31, and Google made its Gemini student hub, study notebooks and Deep Research features free to all users when the offers launched in August. For the companies, the calculation is lifetime value: a student who builds a workflow on Gemini 4 Argon or ChatGPT at $8.99 a month, or nothing at all, is the customer who renews at $19.99 or $20 when the discount ends. The deadline pressure is real on both sides - Google's free-year redemptions expire December 31, and OpenAI's offer lapses two months earlier.
