OpenAI has started showing ads to ChatGPT users in 26 additional countries, taking its advertising business far beyond the United States eight months after it first switched ads on in February. The new markets include Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Bangladesh and Pakistan, The Verge reported.
According to OpenAI's announcement, ads now reach users in 89 countries — a figure The Verge cites directly from the company. The Information, which reported the expansion earlier in the day, put the total at 83 countries; the discrepancy likely reflects different counting of the same rollout. Ads serve ChatGPT Free and Go users, the lower-priced tiers that generate no subscription revenue.
The advertiser base is scaling even faster than the geography. More than 100,000 advertisers have now used the ChatGPT ads platform, up from about 20,000 in August, per The Information — a fivefold increase in under three months.
Advertising has become one of OpenAI's fastest-growing revenue lines at a moment when its spending is anything but modest. Earlier this month the company introduced visual ad formats inside image generation and said its ads surface to a weekly audience of 1.2 billion users — a company-reported figure. It has also said ads do not appear for paid-tier users and that it is piloting brand-safety measurement with DoubleVerify and IAS.
OpenAI is effectively converting its free-user base — by most estimates the largest audience in consumer AI — into an ad business that competes with the search and social platforms. Google has so far kept ads out of Gemini, which makes ChatGPT the first major AI assistant to build advertising into the assistant experience at this scale.
The expansion also sharpens a trade-off users can now see directly: the free tier of the most widely used AI assistant is ad-supported, and the ad load is set by a company under pressure to fund one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in corporate history. For marketers, a new channel with 100,000 advertisers across 89 countries has opened within a single year. The question is not whether ChatGPT ads scale — it is what they do to the product's feel when they do.
