Ex-OpenAI Research Chief Bob McGrew Emerges From Stealth With Arda, a 1.5 Billion Dollar Bet on AI-Run Factories

Bob McGrew, who led research at OpenAI from 2018 to 2024, has quietly built Arda, an AI manufacturing startup that closed a 160 million dollar Series A at a 1.5 billion dollar valuation. Already deployed at Anduril, Arda rebuilds assembly lines in days instead of the three to six months retooling normally takes. Company-provided figures.

Bob McGrew spent a decade as Palantir's product and engineering lead, then four years running research at OpenAI through the launch of ChatGPT and the chaos of November 2023. On Tuesday he broke his silence about what came next: Arda Industries, a startup that applies AI agents to factory automation, which has raised a 160 million dollar Series A at a 1.5 billion dollar valuation.

The round was co-led by Altimeter Capital, Accel and Khosla Ventures, with participation from XYZ Venture Capital, 8VC, SV Angel and Felicis, according to a company press release. It follows a 72 million dollar seed round led by Accel and Founders Fund. Combined, Arda has raised roughly 232 million dollars; CNBC, which got the exclusive interview with McGrew, rounds the figure to 230 million.

Arda's pitch targets one of manufacturing's most stubborn bottlenecks. When a product design changes, human workers can be retrained in a day, but conventional automation can take three to six months to re-engineer. McGrew describes the product as "a user interface and an agent that does for manufacturing engineers what Claude or Cursor does for programmers" — software that turns a product design into an assembly line and keeps that line current as the design evolves.

The company says its AI models are already deployed at defense manufacturer Anduril, and that it works with companies in the data center supply chain. The software runs on a mix of Arda's own proprietary models, open-source models and some frontier models, McGrew told CNBC. Robotics models are next on the product roadmap. All deployment and performance claims are company-provided and not independently verified.

The founding team reads like a Palantir-OpenAI crossover episode. McGrew's co-founders are Augustus Odena, who co-founded Adept and previously worked at Google Brain and Meta's TBD Lab, as chief AI officer; Alex Mark, a former Palantir engineering leader who later worked on IRS Direct File at the US Digital Service, as CTO; and Jakob Frick, previously at Palantir and SpaceXAI. The broader team includes Tesla manufacturing engineers and MIT researchers who work on customers' factory floors.

The bull case rests on the size of the prize. "Manufacturing globally is a 16 trillion dollar industry. In the US alone, it's 3 trillion," said Altimeter's Apoorv Agrawal, who led the round and got to know McGrew when both worked at Palantir. He acknowledged the price is steep for a company emerging from stealth, but argued the long-term opportunity is very high. A March Wall Street Journal report had Arda raising 70 million dollars at a 700 million dollar valuation, meaning the price has more than doubled in seven months.

McGrew frames the company as part of the effort to bring manufacturing back to the United States, arguing that products with frequently changing designs can currently only be built in East Asia because they need an army of quickly retrainable human workers. "No one has ever successfully built a smartphone in the US," he said. If AI can make assembly lines as adaptable as people, his argument goes, onshoring stops being a subsidy story and starts being an engineering one.

For the AI industry, Arda is the latest sign that the agentic software wave is moving from code into physical industries — with valuations to match. The open question is whether a 1.5 billion dollar price for a company that has not publicly named a single manufacturing customer beyond Anduril reflects the market's future or its froth.
