The hardest part of using a chat assistant seriously is continuity. Each new conversation starts blank, and reconstructing context wastes both time and tokens.
What Projects provide
- Persistent instructions. Writing rules, tone and format preferences apply to every chat inside the project.
- Reference files. Documents uploaded once become available to all conversations in the project.
- Grouped history. Related threads stay together instead of scattering across the sidebar.
A workable structure
Create one project per ongoing responsibility rather than one per topic. "Weekly reporting" and "client A onboarding" are good projects. "Random questions" is not — it accumulates noise that degrades retrieval within the project.
Keep instructions short
Project instructions are loaded into every conversation, so length has a direct cost. Store detailed reference material as files and keep the instruction block to the rules that genuinely need to apply every time.
Housekeeping
Review projects monthly. Remove stale files, since outdated documents are worse than no documents when the model treats them as current.
