Suno Opens a Speech Beta: One Prompt Now Produces an Eight-Minute Voiceover With Its Own Score

Suno has opened a public beta of Speech, which turns a script or a one-line prompt into a spoken voiceover and lays generated music underneath it in the same track. Generations run to about eight minutes, the music bed can be switched off, and Suno calls it the first audio model to produce voice and music together. The launch lands as Universal's second copyright suit against Suno's music generator covers 60,202 works.

Suno, the company best known for generating songs from a text prompt, moved into spoken audio on Thursday, opening a public beta of Speech across its web and mobile apps. The feature writes a voiceover from a script or a short description and, in the same pass, generates a bed of background music to sit underneath it. Free users can try it, not just paying subscribers.

The product has two modes. Simple takes a description — Suno's own example is a pirate captain rallying his crew — while Advanced accepts a finished script. Users can set the voice's gender, its speaking style, and how much each generation is allowed to vary, and can switch the music off entirely with a toggle if they want clean speech. A single generation runs to roughly eight minutes, or about 1,200 words at normal speaking pace.

“Music will always be at the heart of Suno and what we build. At the same time, our vision has always extended to other forms of human expression,” chief product officer Jack Brody said in the announcement. “Today, we're expanding what's possible in Suno with Speech: the first audio model that generates voice and music together as one cohesive track.”

Nothing about synthetic speech is new. Google DeepMind has worked on deep-learning speech synthesis for a decade, Adobe ships a text-to-speech tool, and ElevenLabs has been selling a voice since 2023. Suno's pitch is procedural rather than technical: instead of generating a voice and then hunting for a track to put behind it, one model produces both layers so they agree with each other. The company's suggested uses are poems with a calm soundtrack, meditations, motivational speeches and bedtime stories.

The company is candid that the beta is rough. Accents can wander — British ones occasionally drift toward Australian — and dramatic pauses can come out very dramatic indeed. Suno said it ran the feature in a limited test for about a month before opening it up.

The commercial logic behind the timing is harder to miss. Suno's music generator is the subject of active litigation, and the docket has thickened. Universal filed a second suit in mid-September, adding 60,202 works to its copyright claim; at the $150,000 per work ceiling US law allows for wilful infringement, that filing alone carries a theoretical $9.03bn exposure, though courts almost never award the maximum. Warner settled with Suno in November 2025 in a deal reported at around $500m, licensing its catalogue for training, and talks with Sony and Universal were reported in April 2026 to be at an impasse over whether tracks generated on Suno can travel beyond its walled garden.

Moving into synthetic voice does not move Suno onto safer ground — it changes which rights holders sit across the table. A tool that lets a user pick a voice's gender and style and then run it for eight minutes is close to what the UK “Save Our Voices Now” campaign, in which actors pressed for legal ownership of their own voices, was describing when it launched in August.

The practical read is that Suno is converting a single-purpose music product into an audio platform before the music litigation resolves. Generating a podcast segment, a long explainer or most of a conference talk from one prompt, with scoring attached and no microphone involved, is a real capability. The open question is whether the second act ends up in the same courtroom as the first.
