Meta's decision to publish model weights is often described as altruism. It is more usefully understood as a competitive position.
The logic
- Undercut the model layer. If capable weights are freely available, the value of a competing closed model falls.
- Commoditise the complement. Cheaper inference increases demand for the hardware and platforms where Meta already operates.
- Attract developer mindshare. Researchers and startups standardise on what they can download and modify.
- Recruit and retain. Open research is a powerful hiring signal in a competitive field.
What it changes for everyone else
Self-hosting becomes a credible baseline, which puts downward pressure on API pricing across the market. It also means the frontier of competition shifts toward evaluation, tooling, distribution and product design — areas where a released model gives no advantage.
The limits
Released weights still carry licence terms, and the largest models are not generally the ones published. Open is a spectrum, not a binary.
