OpenAI is collapsing the boundary between chatting with ChatGPT and delegating work to it. In an email to users, the company said it is merging the Chat and Work tabs inside the ChatGPT desktop experience, starting with a select group of users for feedback before a wider rollout.
"This will enable you to move from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place," the email read. "You can bring in your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work."
One detail will matter to power users: OpenAI said ChatGPT and Codex, which remains a separate experience in the desktop app, will now draw tokens from the same allowance pool. The company said the change will not affect most users, but "based on usage and model, some folks might need to wait for resets more frequently." It is the first time casual chat and the agentic coding product share a single budget.
The move is a cleanup as much as a strategy. The desktop app had grown into a maze of ChatGPT and Codex sections, with Chat and Work tabs nested inside the former, and users routinely losing track of where a project lived. The Work tab, introduced as an agentic workspace, will now be the same surface as the conversation itself.
The industry is converging on the same design. Anthropic merged Claude's chat and Cowork modes into a single screen in September, and Google has been pulling document editing and agentic actions directly into Gemini conversations. The chat window is becoming the operating surface, and every major lab is dismantling the separate "agent mode" it built only months ago.
The economics are the part to watch. A shared token pool makes heavy agent usage directly visible on consumer subscription plans, and OpenAI's own caution about more frequent resets suggests the company expects exactly that. Interface consolidation is easy; paying for it is where the friction will show.
