Harness Buys Augment Code's Cosmos to Complete Its Autonomous Software Factory, From Ticket to Merge-Ready PR

Harness has acquired select Augment Code assets - the Cosmos software factory, Auggie CLI and Code Context Engine - for an undisclosed sum, with the team joining the company. Cosmos becomes the Harness Cosmos Software Factory Agent, automating engineering work from ticket to merge-ready pull request while Harness's delivery, security, runtime and cost agents carry the code to production.

Harness, the San Francisco company behind an "Autonomous SDLC Platform," has acquired select assets of AI coding startup Augment Code, including the Cosmos software factory, the Auggie CLI, the Code Context Engine and related technology. Financial terms were not disclosed. The team behind those products is joining Harness, and Cosmos is available today as the Harness Cosmos Software Factory Agent.

The deal plugs the missing front end into a platform built for everything that happens after code is written. Harness's existing agents move changes to production, run security testing, protect applications at runtime and manage cloud and AI costs. What it lacked was the part where the code gets written - which is precisely what Cosmos does: when a ticket is assigned, a bug is reported or a requirement lands, a fleet of agents plans the change, writes the code and tests, and opens a pull request.

The workflow is event-driven rather than prompt-driven. Ticket updates, pull requests, alerts, webhooks and schedules all kick off work, and agents keep going through review comments, failed checks and merge conflicts instead of stopping at the first draft. Each agent runs in its own isolated virtual machine, and engineers are pulled in only at judgment checkpoints such as approving a design or making the final merge. Teams start from prebuilt "Experts" - Project Builder, PR Author, Deep Reviewer and PR Fixer - and tune each one to their own codebase.

The strategic payoff, in founder and CEO Jyoti Bansal's telling, is connecting two context graphs that have never met: Augment's Code Context Engine, which maps a codebase and the relationships relevant to a task, and Harness's Software Delivery Knowledge Graph, which tracks builds, deployments, infrastructure, security findings and costs. Delivery context can shape a change before it is written; findings from testing, security scanning or production can flow back to Cosmos with the evidence needed to fix and revalidate it.

"AI's impact on software will not be measured by how much code it generates, but by how much valuable software reaches customers," Bansal said in the announcement. Augment Code CEO Matt McClernan wrote that Harness's integrated platform delivers these capabilities more effectively than building them independently, while co-founder and CTO Igor Ostrovsky called joining Harness the next step toward making engineering work increasingly autonomous.

The acquisition also marks a consolidation point for the AI coding-tools wave. Harness itself was valued at $5.5 billion after a $240 million Series E, expects cumulative revenue of about $400 million by the end of 2026 with financial services contributing roughly 30%, and counts Citibank, United Airlines and PayPal among its customers. As coding agents multiply, the money is shifting from the model that writes the code to the platform that can prove what happened to it afterward.
