OpenAI Will Put Sponsored Images Inside ChatGPT Image Generation — Testing in the US This Month for Its 1.2 Billion Weekly Users

OpenAI announced a new visual ad format that places labeled sponsored images inside ChatGPT, initially during image generation, with a US test starting later this month. Ads stay separate from generated content and answers, paid Plus/Pro/Enterprise users see none, and OpenAI unveiled a measurement stack spanning AppsFlyer, LiveRamp, DoubleVerify and others.

OpenAI is expanding its advertising business in ChatGPT with a new visual format that puts full images of sponsored products and services on screen — and for now, the first place users will see them is inside image generation. The company said testing begins in the US later this month with an initial group of advertisers, with ads clearly labeled and kept separate from the image being created.

The scale behind the move is the point: OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people each week, which it calls the world's largest AI-native consumer platform. Advertising, the company argues, is how it keeps AI broadly accessible rather than subscription-only. Until now, ChatGPT's ads — introduced in February 2026 — were small sponsored cards carrying a company name, logo and link beneath the chat. The new format gives brands visual space to show how a product is used or the experience it enables, and OpenAI says it will experiment with more formats from here.

Subscribers are exempt. Ads will not appear for ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Enterprise customers, and OpenAI repeats its standing principles: advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides, conversations stay private, and users remain in control of the experience. Guardrails are designed to keep ads out of "emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts."

The more consequential half of the announcement is measurement. OpenAI is wiring ChatGPT Ads into the standard ad-tech stack: conversion data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp; attribution partnerships with AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava, Singular, Airbridge, Tenjin, Northbeam and DV Rockerbox; full-funnel measurement with Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL; and early geo-based incrementality experiments with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic.

Early numbers, shared by the partners themselves and not independently audited, suggest the channel is pulling new demand: WeightWatchers' cost per acquired customer from ChatGPT Ads ran 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark according to DV Rockerbox; health brand Dose saw 67% of incremental purchases come from net-new customers per WorkMagic; and Portland Leather drew 93% of its ChatGPT Ads visitors as first-time visitors per Triple Whale. For a platform whose users arrive with intent and a described problem, that profile resembles search advertising more than social feed ads — which is exactly why the ad industry is watching.

OpenAI is also moving to reassure brands on placement. It is piloting independent brand-suitability evaluations with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, in controlled test environments that give auditors no access to users' private conversations, and has enabled "negative phrases" so advertisers can exclude contexts they want nothing to do with. Automated review, human oversight and continuous monitoring backstop the policies. IAS chief executive Lidiane Jones said advertisers need brand-safety protections that are "durable, consistent and scalable" as ads extend into AI-native environments.

The strategic read is straightforward: OpenAI has found its second revenue engine, and it is pricing it like search. A conversational interface that knows what a user is trying to accomplish is arguably the most valuable ad inventory since the search box — and OpenAI is racing to professionalize measurement and brand safety before rivals like Google's Gemini and Meta's Muse finish building their own. The open question is whether ad-laden free ChatGPT can keep the trust that made it the default AI assistant in the first place; the company is betting 1.2 billion weekly users say yes.
