Google's assistant is most useful when it can reference your own material: a draft in Docs, a thread in Gmail, a sheet of figures. That grounding is also where most of the setup effort goes.
Where it saves the most time
- Summarising long threads. Turning a fifty-message email chain into decisions and open questions.
- Drafting from an existing document. Producing a variant that follows a template already in Drive.
- Meeting notes. Capturing action items tied to attendees.
- Sheet analysis. Explaining a formula or building one from a described intent.
The prerequisite nobody mentions
File organisation. Assistants retrieve from what they can find, and inconsistent naming across a shared drive produces answers based on the wrong document. A modest clean-up of your most-used folders pays back within weeks.
Set expectations on accuracy
Grounding reduces fabrication but does not eliminate it. When an answer cites a document, open it. The citation exists precisely so that verification takes seconds.
