GitHub Copilot is the most widely deployed coding assistant. It completes code inline, answers questions about an open repository and can take on bounded tasks in an agentic mode.
Capabilities
- Inline completion. Context-aware suggestions that respect the file you are editing and nearby code.
- Chat in the IDE. Explain, refactor, generate tests and write commit messages without leaving the editor.
- Agent mode. Assign an issue and let it plan, edit multiple files and open a pull request for review.
- Broad IDE support. VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Neovim and the web.
Practical notes
Suggestions still need review: confident-looking code can be subtly wrong, and licence compliance for generated snippets is an organisational responsibility. Teams should also agree on what may be sent to the service.
Best for
Professional teams that want assistance embedded in an existing GitHub workflow.
