Cursor is an AI-first code editor built as a fork of VS Code. Rather than bolting a chat panel onto a normal editor, it treats the model as a collaborator with access to the whole project.
What makes it different
- Codebase indexing. Ask questions across an entire repository, not just the open file.
- Multi-file edits. Describe a change and review a diff that spans several files before accepting.
- Predictive edits. Suggests the next change based on what you just did.
- Familiar base. Extensions, themes and keybindings carry over from VS Code.
Trade-offs
Heavy agentic use consumes request quota quickly on lower tiers, and very large repositories need indexing time. As always, generated diffs should be read rather than rubber-stamped.
Best for
Developers who want the most aggressive AI integration available and are comfortable reviewing large automated diffs.
