Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's assistant layer across Windows, Edge, Bing and Microsoft 365. Its defining trait is access to your own work data: mail, calendar, files, chats and meetings.
What sets it apart
- Microsoft Graph grounding. Answers can cite your own documents and emails rather than the open web.
- In-app assistance. Summarise a Teams meeting, draft a reply in Outlook or build a deck in PowerPoint without leaving the app.
- Windows integration. System-level shortcuts and a dedicated key on newer keyboards.
- Enterprise controls. Tenant-level administration, audit logs and data residency options.
Trade-offs
The experience varies sharply between the free consumer tier and the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, and the most valuable features only work when your organisation's data is well organised to begin with.
Best for
Enterprises standardised on Microsoft 365 that want AI assistance without moving data into a third-party tool.
