Dallas' Disruptive Closes a $10 Billion Blind-Pool Fund to Write $1 Billion Checks in AI and Defense

Dallas investment firm Disruptive announced a $10 billion blind-pool fund to back at least 10 late-stage companies with checks of up to $1 billion each, focused on AI and defense. It is the largest venture fund ever raised in Texas and one of the biggest of the year. The firm, which previously relied on deal-by-deal SPVs, has returned over $6 billion on roughly $1.9 billion invested.

Disruptive, the Dallas-based investment firm known for early positions in Palantir, Airbnb and Spotify, announced Tuesday that it has closed a $10 billion fund to back at least 10 late-stage companies, with individual checks of up to $1 billion. The vehicle concentrates on the two most capital-hungry corners of the private market: artificial intelligence and defense. According to the Dallas Business Journal, it is the largest venture fund ever raised in Texas.

The fund is a structural first for the firm. Disruptive built its track record through deal-by-deal special purpose vehicles, letting investors opt into each company individually. This is its first blind-pool fund, where limited partners commit capital without knowing the targets — a structure that has become rare as institutional investors demand transparency, and a signal of how much sway the firm's track record now carries. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that Disruptive had already secured at least $7.5 billion in commitments before the final close.

That record is unusually measurable. Bloomberg reported that the firm told its LPs it has returned more than $6 billion on roughly $1.9 billion invested in startups, a multiple most venture firms never approach. Its recent bets include chip startup Groq and AI voice-generation company ElevenLabs, both of which fit the new fund's AI-and-defense mandate.

The firm's lineage is part of the story. Alex Davis founded Disruptive in 2012 and is the grandson of the late billionaire oil magnate Marvin Davis, and the fund's size marks a generational reallocation of Texas energy wealth into technology. It also reflects where late-stage capital has migrated: growth-stage AI companies now routinely raise rounds above $500 million before reaching profitability, and public-market volatility has pushed those raises toward private funds capable of writing nine-figure checks.

The implications run in two directions. For founders, a fund that can deploy $1 billion in a single check changes negotiating leverage at the top of the AI market, where a handful of firms — many now raising their own mega-funds — compete to lead rounds before companies go public. For LPs, the blind-pool structure shifts diligence from company-picking to firm-picking, with governance and reporting quality becoming the main safeguards while the portfolio remains unknown.

The defense half of the mandate is equally deliberate. Federal spending priorities, supply-chain politics and autonomous systems have made defense tech one of the most active venture subsectors, and firms that can bridge AI software and defense hardware are positioning for the next wave of public listings. Disruptive is not obligated to name its targets until capital is deployed, which means the first portfolio disclosure will be the real signal of where the $10 billion lands.
