US Venture Funding Hits a Record $515.8 Billion in Nine Months as AI Takes 82.7% of Deal Value - but Q3 Fell 35%

US venture deal value reached $515.8 billion in the first nine months of 2026, 44% above the previous annual record, with AI at a record 82.7% of deal value. Q3 funding still fell 35% quarter-over-quarter to $92 billion as the megadeal wave paused and 992 US unicorns kept waiting to exit.

Venture capital in the United States has already set an all-time record - with a quarter of the year still to go. According to the PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, US venture deal value reached $515.8 billion in the first nine months of 2026, surpassing the previous annual record by 44%.

AI is almost all of it. OpenAI and Anthropic alone raised more than $200 billion in the first half of the year - about $110 billion and $65 billion respectively, per the report - and AI companies accounted for a record 82.7% of deal value year to date. The quarterly share has actually been declining since January, down to 65.9% in Q3, as the earliest megadeals gave way to a broader but smaller pipeline.

That explains the quarter's headline softness. North American startup funding fell 35% from Q2 to $92 billion in Q3, though it was still up 50% from a year earlier. PitchBook attributes the sequential drop largely to the absence of new megadeals for the AI giants rather than any fundamental pullback: startups still closed an estimated 5,012 deals in the quarter, and PitchBook's records show only one busier quarter, at the start of 2022.

Late-stage and technology growth investors deployed $66.45 billion in Q3, up about a third from a year ago. The largest AI rounds of the quarter went to Databricks at $5 billion, AI infrastructure company Crusoe at $3.9 billion, The Boring Company at $3 billion and AI coding startup Cognition at $2 billion. More than a dozen startups raised late-stage or growth rounds above $1 billion.

Early-stage stayed resilient. Investors committed $20.6 billion to seed through growth-stage rounds in Q3 - down sequentially but well above prior-year levels - with at least $5 billion flowing into seed, angel and pre-seed deals. The standout AI checks: open-source AI company River AI at $1.1 billion Series A, nuclear startup Valar Atomics at $660 million Series B, chip developer Fab2 at $500 million Series A, physical AI startup Walden Robotics at $300 million seed and Veeda AI at $90 million.

The pressure point is exits. PitchBook research chief Nizar Tarhuni said "the real story sits on the exit side," with the IPO market slipping further out and sellers leaning on M&A to get anything done. North America is now home to 992 unicorns waiting for liquidity. Eleven acquisitions of $1 billion or more closed at reported prices in Q3, led by Nvidia's $12.93 billion purchase of Hugging Face, AMD's roughly $8.2 billion acquisition of World Labs and Stripe's approximately $7.5 billion purchase of OpenRouter.

One deal distorted everything: SpaceX's $60 billion all-stock purchase of Cursor developer Anysphere accounted for 53.1% of third-quarter exit value on its own, ranking as the second-largest acquisition of a venture-backed company on record. Strip that single transaction out and the Q3 exit picture looks considerably thinner than the headline suggests.

For AI founders and their backers, the report describes a market with record money in and record money stuck. Capital has concentrated at the very top of the private market; until the IPO window reopens, the industry's liquidity will keep depending on a handful of giant acquisitions - and on the willingness of late-stage investors to keep rolling the record forward.
