Anthropic Now Operates Claude Directly on Google Cloud With IAM, Marketplace Billing and Opus 5.5 Fast Mode

Anthropic has made Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed) generally available, letting Google Cloud customers call the Claude API operated by Anthropic with IAM credentials, Marketplace billing and usage counting toward existing commitments. Fast Mode for Opus 5.5 is also GA, and new Claude Platform features now ship on day one.

Anthropic has flipped the switch on a new way for Google Cloud customers to use Claude: the Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed) offering is now generally available, the company said in its October 22 release notes, with Google Cloud following up on October 23. Unlike the existing Google-managed integration, this route is operated by Anthropic itself and reached through a customer's Google Cloud project.

The mechanics are straightforward. Access is controlled with Google Cloud IAM, so teams can keep the credentials and permission structures they already manage. Billing runs through Google Cloud Marketplace on a single invoice, and usage draws down existing Google Cloud commitments rather than requiring a separate Anthropic contract. Anthropic says the offering is currently available with US and Global endpoints.

The bigger promise is feature parity. Google Cloud customers get the full Claude Platform, and new features and betas ship the same day they land on the native platform. That includes Claude Managed Agents in beta for long-running agents without infrastructure management, code execution, computer use, agent skills, an advisor strategy beta, the Files API, citations, web search and fetch, an MCP connector in beta, prompt caching and batch processing.

Fast Mode for Claude Opus 5.5 is also generally available on the Anthropic-managed offering, giving latency-sensitive workloads a faster tier of the flagship model. Claude continues to be available in parallel through the Google-managed option, where Google operates the service and acts as data processor, so enterprises can now choose between two operationally different paths to the same models.

Early customers cited by Anthropic highlight why the distinction matters. Arvind Sundararajan, a CTO building enterprise agents, said day-one access to new Claude features was the deciding factor, along with reusing existing IAM setup and commitment retirement. Maksim Gorev, head of AI engineering at an ecommerce platform, said prompt caching remained central to running their Claude-based agent cost-effectively at scale even after moving billing and access behind Google Cloud.

Strategically, the launch is a quiet settlement of an awkward channel question. Anthropic's IPO filings have documented how dependent the company is on cloud partners, and a Google-operated integration puts Google in the middle of the customer relationship. The Anthropic-managed option reasserts that Anthropic runs its own API wherever customers happen to buy it, while still letting Google book the consumption against its cloud commitments.

For Google Cloud, the message is that it would rather host its rival's models on its own terms than push those customers toward its in-house Gemini stack. For enterprises, the practical test will be regional data-residency guarantees and how the two offerings diverge on controls over time, since global endpoints do not carry residency commitments and the two routes process data under different operators.
