Google Signs a 20-Year Nuclear Deal With Constellation: 890 MW of New Reactor Output and $4.3 Billion of Upgrades

Google and Constellation signed a 20-year PPA adding 890 MW of nuclear capacity from upgrades to 11 existing reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, backed by over $4.3 billion of investment. A separate 15-year deal covers another 2,700 MW.

Google and Constellation Energy on Tuesday announced one of the largest corporate clean-energy deals in US history: a 20-year power purchase agreement that will fund upgrades to 11 existing nuclear reactors across Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, adding 890 megawatts of new generation capacity to the PJM grid — roughly the output of an entirely new large reactor, delivered years faster than building one.

Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion in the equipment and digital upgrades. The first upgraded plant is expected to start delivering power to Google in 2028, with the remaining projects coming online through 2032 or 2033. On top of the uprate deal, the two companies signed a separate 15-year agreement covering another 2,700 MW from Constellation's existing PJM nuclear assets, bringing the total arrangements to about 3.59 gigawatts.

The scale shows in the market reaction: Constellation shares jumped roughly 14-15% intraday Tuesday to their highest level since May, and the lift spread across the power sector — Talen Energy rose about 13%, Vistra 11% and NRG Energy 8%. Google says the agreements help sustain about 4,400 existing jobs and create roughly 7,200 construction jobs.

The context is an electricity crunch that has become the binding constraint on AI expansion. PJM, the largest US grid operator, serves more than 67 million people across 13 states and powers a dense concentration of data centers; it has warned that data center customers may need to bring their own generation or face remote curtailment during peak demand. Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez said the company has long known its reactors could produce more output but the engineering costs were prohibitive — until a hyperscaler's 20-year revenue commitment changed the math.

The deal extends a now-familiar playbook. Last week Amazon signed a 20-year, 690 MW nuclear agreement with Constellation, including new capacity from upgrading the Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland. Microsoft's 2024 deal backs Constellation's restart of Three Mile Island's Unit 1, targeted for 2027. Google has separately supported NextEra Energy's restart of the Duane Arnold reactor in Iowa, a project that recently secured a US government loan of up to $1.9 billion.

Google energy executive Amanda Peterson Corio said securing reliable, clean power "responsibly and quickly" matters especially as data centers draw public criticism. Constellation also announced a five-year expanded technology alliance with Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to accelerate delivery, optimize asset dispatch and protect critical infrastructure.

The takeaway: AI's supply chain now runs through the power sector, and the biggest technology companies are behaving like regulated utilities — signing decades-long contracts to lock in generation before someone else does. Up-rating existing reactors is the fastest lever available, and Google just bought most of what the US fleet can realistically give.
