Nexus Mods Makes AI Disclosure Mandatory and Gives Authors 60 Days, but Still Refuses to Ban AI Mods

Nexus Mods will require every new mod upload to declare whether AI was used, with AI-assisted mods needing a public explanation of how. Existing mods get a 60-day grace period until January 2, 2027, after which enforcement begins. The site still refuses an outright ban and says it will never train AI on mods.

Nexus Mods, the largest mod repository in PC gaming, published its most detailed position yet on generative AI on November 3, and the core decision is a split: AI mods stay welcome, but hiding their use no longer is. Every new upload must now declare whether AI was used in the work, and mods tagged AI-assisted must carry a public explanation of how and where it was used. AI tags will now appear immediately after the adult-content tags on mod pages, the most prominent slot the site has.

Site owner Victor "Foledinho" Folmann explained why there is no outright ban. AI now runs through the whole creation process, from script autocompletion to generated textures, voices and full assets, he wrote, and a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable is impossible to draw. A ban would not eliminate AI from modding, it would only push it underground and stop people from mentioning it. The site's stated premise is pro-human creativity, and it promises it will never use mods to train AI, nor sell or license them to anyone who would.

Existing mods get a 60-day grace period that started November 3 and ends January 2, 2027. After that, the Trust and Safety team begins direct enforcement: authors are notified and asked to add missing disclosures or permission settings, and continued failure leads to moderation action, account restrictions, warnings, or removal. Folmann is realistic about detection, calling it by no means an exact science and saying the system will lean on manual moderation and community reports.

The policy also reshapes permissions. New options covering AI usage, AI training, forks and derivative mods will default to Ask me, so reuse requires explicit consent rather than assumption, and attribution rules will require credit with a link back to the original mod. Readers get more control too: filters to hide AI-generated content will move out of settings and onto game pages and the homepage, with search integration planned next.

One number stands out for a site where modders earn Donation Points: mods tagged AI-Generated Content received 2.13 percent of all Donation Points this year. Nexus is keeping reward rules unchanged for now, reasoning that financially penalizing disclosed AI use would give authors a reason not to disclose, but it calls the issue serious and is working on a longer-term answer.

The stance lands in the middle of a fast-moving platform fight. Steam disclosed that nearly half of October game releases declared AI use, and itch.io has been purging undisclosed AI content outright. Nexus Mods, with one of the most valuable mod ecosystems in gaming, has chosen labeling over prohibition, betting that transparency, permissions and user filters can hold together a community that bans would split apart.
