Google DeepMind is Alphabet's artificial intelligence research and model-development organisation. It was formed on 20 April 2023 by combining two research lineages: DeepMind, the London lab founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014, and Google Brain, the deep-learning group that began inside Google X in 2011.
Who founded DeepMind: the lab was founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman. Hassabis brought a PhD in cognitive neuroscience and a background in game design; Legg contributed theoretical work on what artificial general intelligence would actually mean; Suleyman came from social entrepreneurship. Early backers included Peter Thiel and Founders Fund. Of the three, only Hassabis remained through the Google acquisition and the 2023 merger — Suleyman today leads Microsoft AI. Google acquired DeepMind in January 2014 for a reported GBP 400 million, a price never officially disclosed.
The DeepMind side built its reputation on deep reinforcement learning. The December 2013 paper "Playing Atari with Deep Reinforcement Learning" introduced the Deep Q-Network; a 2015 Nature cover paper showed a single network reaching human-level play across 49 Atari games. AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol 4-1 in March 2016, and AlphaZero later unified Go, shogi and chess through pure self-play. AlphaFold took protein-structure prediction to practical accuracy, work that earned Hassabis and John Jumper half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The Google Brain side contributed TensorFlow, large-scale distributed training infrastructure, and the Transformer architecture that underlies nearly every modern language model.
Today both threads run through the Gemini family of multimodal models, which powers Google's consumer AI products, its developer platform and its Cloud offerings, alongside Gemma for open-weight releases. The research portfolio also spans generative media (Veo, Imagen), NotebookLM, Gemini Robotics, weather forecasting (GraphCast), materials discovery (GNoME), mathematics (AlphaProof, AlphaGeometry), drug discovery (Isomorphic Labs) and AI safety.
Leadership changed in August 2026. After leading the combined organisation since the 2023 merger, Hassabis stepped back from day-to-day operations to become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously chief technology officer and chief AI architect, became Senior Vice President responsible for operations and the Gemini frontier models. The change separates long-horizon scientific strategy from product execution at a point where Gemini competes directly with OpenAI's GPT family, Anthropic's Claude and Meta's Llama.
