Mistral AI is a French artificial intelligence company headquartered in Paris. Founded in April 2023 by three researchers — Arthur Mensch, formerly of Google DeepMind, together with Guillaume Lample and Timothee Lacroix from Meta's LLaMA team — it has become Europe's most valuable AI company and the continent's closest challenger to OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
Mistral's defining strategy is open weights. Most of its models ship under permissive licences (Apache 2.0, and a modified MIT licence for Mistral Medium 3.5), letting developers and enterprises download, modify and self-host rather than depend on a hosted API. Revenue comes from Le Plateforme, its API service, plus enterprise deployments and Mistral Compute.
Who founded Mistral AI: Arthur Mensch (CEO, ex-Google DeepMind), Guillaume Lample (chief scientist, ex-Meta) and Timothee Lacroix (CTO, ex-Meta). All three are French and became France's first AI billionaires.
Products. The flagship consumer assistant launched as Le Chat in February 2024 and was renamed Vibe in 2026. Mistral Large 3, released in December 2025, is a mixture-of-experts model with 675 billion total parameters and 41 billion active. The lineup also includes Mistral Medium 3.5, Mistral Small 4, Ministral 3 edge models, Codestral for code, Magistral for reasoning, Devstral, Pixtral for vision, and Mistral OCR.
Funding history tracks its rapid rise: EUR 105 million seed weeks after founding (June 2023), EUR 385 million Series A at over EUR 2 billion (December 2023), EUR 600 million Series B at EUR 5.8 billion (June 2024), EUR 1.7 billion Series C led by ASML at EUR 11.7 billion (September 2025), and EUR 3 billion Series D above EUR 21 billion (September 2026) — described by the company as the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company. It also raised USD 830 million in debt financing in March 2026 to build its own data centres in France, the first due to run in Paris by 2027.
Business. Mistral crossed a USD 400 million annualised revenue run rate in January 2026, up from roughly USD 20 million a year earlier. Customers skew European and include HSBC, Stellantis, ASML, Tesco and CMA CGM, plus national governments in France, Germany and Greece. Investors include Samsung Electronics, Nvidia, ASML, Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed, General Catalyst and Bpifrance; ASML is the largest shareholder at around 11 percent. Mistral acquired Koyeb in February 2026 and Austrian industrial simulation specialist Emmi AI in May 2026.
